Two ways to find the right Defender.

Defender knowledge

Start with the question behind the vehicle.

A second life

A Defender does not arrive as a blank canvas. It arrives with a past, a purpose and the possibility of many more miles.

A River House build begins with listening. Where will it live, who will travel in it and which journeys should it make possible?

The answers shape the donor, body style, mechanical character and materials. Every decision must belong to the same vehicle.

Chapter I The house behind the name

Built on a lasting fascination with British motor cars.

Restoration began as a personal passion in 1985. River House was established in 1996, carrying that experience into a dedicated home for British classics.

Today that experience is focused on the Defender: honest, useful and unmistakable.

Chapter II · The restoration

The finished Defender is only the final chapter.

Beneath the paint is the story that matters: the right donor, a structure laid bare and mechanical systems rebuilt.

Follow the work from first brief to the moment the keys are ready to change hands.

Find the right beginning.

Potential donors are assessed for identity, condition, configuration and their intended destination.

02

Take it apart to understand it.

Disassembly replaces assumption with evidence, revealing the real structural and mechanical condition.

Restore the way it moves.

Engine, driveline, brakes, steering, suspension and electrics are rebuilt as one machine.

Recover the shape, then perfect the surface.

Panel fit, preparation and paint restore the Defender’s familiar geometry.

Make the cabin belong to its owner.

Leather, stitching, carpets and controls are composed around use, without disguising the Defender.

Final inspection and 1,000 kilometres of road testing let the vehicle settle, reveal and be refined.

The quality you notice slowly is the quality that lasts.
Panel alignment, the resistance of a switch, the tactility of a wheel and the meeting of two materials are small moments. Together, they determine whether a Defender feels assembled or considered.

Built to leave the workshop

A restoration is not finished when the paint dries.

The vehicle must work as one complete motor car. Inspection and extended road testing come before release, giving systems time to settle and the workshop time to refine what only driving can reveal.

Chapter IV · The life ahead

The workshop is where the work ends. The story continues elsewhere.

A River House Defender is built to return to real life: early mornings, long roads, muddy boots, family weekends and the journeys that cannot be planned from a specification sheet.
